Our bearings meet the most stringent dimensional tolerances and rotational accuracy standards (up to ABEC 7/9, ISO P4/P2), and are supported by AS9100/ISO-certified services including clean room lubrication, serialization, and material traceability.
What Are Instrument Bearings?

Instrument bearings are high-precision, small-diameter ball bearings engineered for applications requiring ultra-low torque, high-speed capability, and exacting dimensional control. They are typically manufactured to ABEC 5, 7, or 9 tolerances and are available in bore sizes as small as 1 mm, with multiple material and lubrication options for extreme environments.
Key Characteristics:
-
Precision Machining: Ground to tight dimensional tolerances for minimal runout and high repeatability.
-
Miniature Sizes: Outer diameters as small as 3 mm, ideal for compact or space-constrained assemblies.
-
Low Starting Torque: Enables smooth motion in sensitive systems like sensors, gyros, or encoders.
-
High-Speed Capability: Supports rotational speeds exceeding 100,000 RPM in air or vacuum conditions.
-
Material Options: Stainless steel, hybrid ceramic (steel races with Si3N4 balls), and full ceramic configurations.
Instrument Bearing Types & Configurations

IBSCO provides instrument bearings in multiple structural designs to match varying axial and radial load demands:
1. Radial Deep Groove Instrument Bearings
-
Single-row design with deep raceways for radial load support.
-
Optional closures (shields/seals) or open type.
-
Used in motorized systems, gyros, medical pumps.
2. Angular Contact Instrument Bearings
-
Designed for combined radial and axial loads.
-
Often paired or duplexed (face-to-face, back-to-back) for rigidity or preload control.
-
Used in spindles, encoder wheels, or turbine sensors.
3. Flanged Instrument Bearings
-
Integrated mounting flange simplifies alignment and retention.
-
Used in compact assemblies like medical analyzers or gimbals.
4. Thin Section / Slim Line
-
Optimized for light weight and space efficiency.
-
Reduced cross-section while maintaining load and speed specs.
-
Ideal for robotics, satellites, and surgical instruments.
